How to maximize your gallery from a single pose- MJ’s Photography Houston newborn photographer

How to maximize your gallery from a single pose during a newborn session, while still getting multiple looks!

Newborn sessions can be lengthy especially if that little one just doesn’t want to sleep for you! It is so important to maximize each pose in your newborn galleries. Doing this will help you shorten your newborn session times and still be able to get a great variety of images for your clients.

It’s all in the wrap!

After doing a couple naked poses I move onto my wrapped poses. Here is where you are going to be able to maximize each wrap! I typically do all of these wrapped poses in an hour.

The first wrapped pose that I do looks something like this. Under this brown wrap is a white basic stretch wrap. It is simple around his chest to hold his hands in place. The brown wrap is simply there for looks and to hold the feet in that cute pose.

You can see that his hands are in position to get the potato pose, I am working each wrapped pose up to the potato sack pose.

While he is wrapped, you want to get multiple angles. This also gives you the chance for your close ups and of course that coveted feet shot!

The second wrapped pose only requires you to remove the brown wrap that is placed for looks. LEAVE the white wrap that is around the hands and chest on. Change out the outward wrap and change out your bonnet/bow. Grab multiple angles from this setup as well! Below is an example.

Third look. SAME white underneath wrap is on. Baby should still be content because you have left them feeling secure with the white stretch wrap on. Here I am simply using the flokati that I am going to use for the potato sack pose. You can also use this pose to grab the eyelash shot.

Fourth look. You guessed it….I still have on the underneath white wrap. Here you can change out the outward wrap if you choose, this time mom loved neutrals, so I decided to keep the same wrap but changed to a prop to gather a better variety of poses. I added in a bowl with some white fluff and a teddy bear. (NOTE: for me it is super to easy to switch back and forth from props to beanbag due to just swiveling my light, if this is not easy for you, you will have to change up the order a little.)

I also like to grab some profile shots, baby toes, and lips!

About this time mom is done with hair and makeup. So baby is in the perfect wrap for some parent shots. I am usually done with these in less than 10 minutes. Here is just a few.

Fifth wrapped shot! Potato sack time! I know some people do not like this pose…but I am obsessed. I love this pose so much and so do all of my clients. I still have the same white underneath stretch wrap on. I am going to take a second stretch wrap and stabilize the neck and back even more with it. Then you take the third wrap(whichever wrap you want on the outside) and wrap babies feet up to their chest as well. For this session mom wanted an Heirloom album, so I love tying in the same wraps to create a beautiful cohesive album.

Sixth wrapped pose! Just put the 4th wrap over the previous potato sack poses wrap. Same flokati. Like so. Just gives an extra look and takes literally 3 minutes.

Seventh wrapped pose time! Take off the last two wraps, keeping on the two white stretch wraps. Then pick an additional wrap and bonnet to put on. My go to here is the bucket pose!

Here if baby is really asleep, I’ll pull their hands out of the wrap and get a chin pose shot in the bucket. This baby was not down for that pose, so I did chin on arms instead.

Here is an example of froggy pose in the bucket…if they stay asleep. (The first white wrap is still round their chest to make them feel secure).

This is the flow I do for every baby! Of course there will be moderations for each baby, but for the most part I still to this routine. My sessions are typically 2 hours and I get around 80 images to show at their Image reveal session.

Her selfless gift – Adoption Houston Photographer

Rhett’s Adoption. MJ’s Photography – Houston Photographer

houston photographer

3.5 years…. 42 months…. roughly 1,260 days…. It took less time than many couples who are plagued with infertility to have a child, but we still felt every moment of that wait. After trying to conceive with IVF last spring and being told at 32 that my egg quality was similar to that of a woman ten years my senior, we immediately decided to pursue adoption.

We became active with our agency August 9, 2018, just four months after our failed transfer. In January 2019 we attempted to get licensed with a foster care agency because there was 5 year old girl we desperately wanted to adopt- Aubrey. I had dreams for months after our IVF transfer that had a little girl, about 5 years old, that was our daughter. When I saw Aubrey’s face in a news story searching for an adoptive home I immediately recognized it. It was her. The little girl in my dreams…. our daughter. Since the embryo we transferred was a female, I had always assumed the connection was my subconscious telling me she was okay and that it was okay for us to continue to pursue adoption. When I saw her face everything in my soul told me this was more than a coincidence. We put our names on hold with our agency and decided to pursue foster-to-adopt in the hopes that we could become Aubrey’s parents. I just KNEW that she was meant to be ours. She resembled me when I was little in addition to being identical to the girl in my dreams. Getting licensed through foster care takes months and by the time we were close to having everything completed, a home had been selected for Aubrey. We were heartbroken. We called our agency and asked to have our names put back on their list in March. She told us the previous two months had been a very busy time with the agency and that she had placed multiple children in that time frame. I remember being so frustrated with our detour and doubting our decision to take a two month hiatus.

On April 23 my husband and I were both at work and I got a call. I didn’t recognize the number and I was in a patient’s room so I did not answer. I finished up with my patient and went into the break room to check my voicemail. It was our agency asking me to call back ASAP. My heart was racing as I hit redial. She didn’t answer. I was so anxious that I could barely catch my breath when the number showed up on my caller ID again. I answered with my voice quivering as she told me about a “unique situation” she had and asked if we would be open to it. It wasn’t an infant, but it was a little boy that was 5 months old. She had already talked to my husband (which is why she didn’t answer the phone when I called) and he said he would rather her talk to me about it. To spare details I will say the adoption had some risk of us not being able to keep him.

It was a risk I was ready to take without hesitation.

cypress photographer

My very logical husband wanted to discuss every angle and possibility, but ultimately said the decision was mine. I called the agency back and asked when we could pick him up. We drove 3.5 hours each way to pick him up the very next day and he has been our son since the moment we laid eyes on him. Legally we remained in a risk period until the end of August so the first four months we were on pins and needles waiting for a call that could potentially turn our wold upside down- either we would be able to keep him through the next legal step, or that we would have to return him to his birth family. We soaked up every moment we could with him.

When the end of August came and we finally finished the legal battles, there was an overwhelming sense of relief. In the state of Texas it’s required that a child live in your home for six months before you can finalize their adoption. October 24 marked six months and the judge ordered that he was officially our son on November 7, 2019. The wait was long and we doubted ourselves and our decisions at every turn, but ultimately we had to endure it all.

houston adoption

Every little turn, every detour, every time we felt we took one step forward and two steps back- it was all part of the journey to our son.

Our perfect baby boy who has his Papa’s grin and my innate ability to fall asleep 3 seconds into a car ride- just one different step or hesitation could have thrown us off our course to him. We are thankful for every second of this journey, thankful for every sign that the universe sent telling us to keep going and not doubt ourselves, and thankful for the love and support our family and friends have shown and continue to show for us and our son.

Most especially we are grateful to his birth momma, C, who put his needs before her own and made one of the most difficult decisions a mother can ever have to make. We cannot imagine life without this precious gift that she so selflessly gave us, and she will always have a place in our hearts!

Ohhhhhh 6 months old. What a fun age. Their little personalities are coming to fruition. The laughs, the giggles, and all the smiles. It is such a fun age to capture. They are half a year, not a newborn, but not a toddler quite yet. Baby rolls are still in tact and they can’t quite get away from you, most of them anyway. Elise is sitting up so well and has been since she was 5 months old.

Elise is already 6 months old and I absolutely cannot believe it. Time really flies. She has the bubbliest personality and is the calmest baby! Her dimple chin gets me every single time! I look back at the past 6 months and cannot imagine my life without her. She brings so much joy not only to me and my husband, but to her big sister. I love how much they love each other.

Just look at her hair. Her nickname is Mo…because of her adorable mohawk! No we do not style it that way, but we definitely do not try to lay it down either. That hair is her and we love it just how it is.

I love being able to capture this precious milestone. Before you know it, they will be walking and into everything. It’s such a sweet age. Cuddles are still an option! Just look at that smile. My hearts melts every time I see it.

For half a year sessions, they can either be outdoor or indoor in my studio in Houston Texas. Katy to be exact. Some times, weather permitting, we do a little of both!

When is the best time to book a newborn session? Weston lakes newborn photographer

Weston lakes newborn photographer | When should I book a newborn session?  – MJ’s Photography

Baby Dynver| Weston lakes newborn photographer

Weston lakes newborn photographer

The best time to book your baby’s newborn session is during your pregnancy. Here is why!

You will be tired. With a new bundle of joy running the schedule in the house, you will easily forget what day of the week it is. You will want to nap any chance you get and will not have time to search for that perfect newborn photographer. If you do already have that newborn photographer picked out, but haven’t contacted them, they may already be booked or you may not get around to calling them while your baby is still young enough to be posed.

Time flies by quick. Most newborn photographers prefer to photograph newborns under 14 days old. If you wait until you are home from the hospital to book your session, the photographer might be booked during that time frame. The longer you wait, the higher the risk of them being booked. If you wait past two weeks, the sleepy poses that you see floating around on the internet, are not as possible. You may not get the photographer you want, meaning those precious moments you wanted photographed perfectly, won’t happen.

Baby Jaiden | Weston lakes newborn photographer

Newborns are Unpredictable.  Newborns can come early, they can come late or they can come right on time, you never know! If you wait until the very last minute, there is no guarantee that you will have time to research your newborn photographer.  So it is best to start your research early and get your photographer booked.

For MJ’s Photography, it is never to early to book. Some of my clients book me as soon as they find out that they are pregnant. They want to make sure their spot is secure and that is one less thing that they have to worry about. I typically write down their due date and make sure to keep the week before, during, and after open for their session. If their baby comes early, I adjust.

Baby Nathan | Weston lakes newborn photographer

You want to make sure you budget for your newborn session. Good newborn photographers are not cheap. Professional newborn photographers are legal and pay their taxes. They are trained to handle your newborn baby safely. Most will provide everything you need for your newborn session. From outfits, to headbands and wraps, you will be covered.  Some have professional lighting in their studio, others will travel to you and prefer natural lighting. For me, I have an in home studio in Killeen, Texas equipped with professional lighting and a closet full of amazing props.

Here is an example of posing safely. This is a pose that is composite. Professional newborn photographers will NOT try to pose your baby like this without using a composite done in photoshop. Below is the final image and the two images I took to create this portrait. Safety is always a priority.

Photographing newborns takes patience and training. Make sure your precious newborn is photographed perfectly, they will never be this little again.
